- Drink lots of water and eat foods enriched with Omega 3 fatty acids. You may also consider adding vitamin supplements for increasing growth rate for tensile strength.
- Apply natural-based products. Nature based products that contain Emu, Shea, and Jojoba oils are moisturizing and therapeutic.
- Invest in the right tools (Wide Tooth Comb, Denman Brush, Plastic Conditioning Caps, Bonnet Hair Dryer, Ionic Blow Dryer, Flat Iron and Silk Scarf). These tools will be your biggest defense against breakage.
- Wash every three to five days, especially if hair is relaxed. Black hair tends to be dry. Shampoo with a moisture-enriched shampoo. Be gentle - too much agitation can cause breaking.
- Combat products build up by clarifying once a month.
- Apply a moisturizing conditioner (preferably one that detangles) weekly, and deep condition under a bonnet dryer for 20 minutes monthly.
- Apply a protein treatment once a month.
- Apply hot oil treatments every six weeks such as Jojoba Oil or Emu Oil. Argan Oil in Moroccan Oil or Marrakesh brands is great also for adding shine and smoothness.
- Only apply heat when necessary. Try to keep heat usage to a minimum of once a week. With proper maintenance; your hair should retain its style without having to be retouched with heat. Your hair will thank you.
- Try taking a break from heat styles. Try wash and go's, two-strand twists, and other no-heat styles.
- Always detangle your hair before going to bed, and apply essential oils to ends of hair at night. This will protect your ends from breakage.
- Cover with silk scarf before going to bed nightly. Covering your hair protects your hair and keeps your style in place.
- Avoid heavy, oil-laden styling products and finishers such as oil sheen. Heavy oil based products weigh down and clogs follicles. Instead, try products made with dimethicone and other synthetic shine enhancers. These products deliver a healthy shine without weighing down your hair or clogging follicles.
- Keep trimmed as needed.
Maintaining healthy black hair isn't as hard as it seems. Developing a sticking to a regimen that works for you without being cumbersome is the best way to get and keep a healthy style.
